UPSTATE

Seeking fulfillment after a move to upstate New York, Nathaniel and his husband Myles decide to adopt an infant daughter. The play opens on the day the couple has returned her to the adoption agency.

THE CANNIBALS OF MCGOWER COUNTY*

In the heart of Texas, Lindalyn returns to her foreclosed barbecue restaurant to collect a few belongings and say goodbye. However, a confrontation with the property’s new out-of-town owner creates an avalanche of friction and hostility. Blue collar rage, the vanishing middle-class, and deep-rooted family trauma collide in this small town carnage.

THE STERLING SPARKLER SAVIOR*

Set in a once grandiose mansion in the Deep South, matriarch Violet Sterling reminisces about her lost youth as an irresistible fireworks model. Violet now spends her days lamenting being a retired “sparkler girl” and tracking the unraveling of her son, Wade, who blatantly mismanages the family fireworks business. This charade culminates when confronted with the man responsible her husband’s murder, forcing this family to accept their harrowing past.

OUT OF ICELAND 

Caroline Miller, a travel writer from New York, falls off Iceland’s Askja volcano while researching her latest book. The volcano’s American overseer, Hal, nurses her back to health and the two strike up an unlikely bond. Complications arise when they return back to Askja and a trickster Icelandic troll, Thor, throws roadblock after roadblock in their way. Faced with mortality, they confront their feelings for one another while desperately trying to get out of Iceland.

The dark and disturbing Standing With Blackness, by US playwright Drew Larimore, provided a welcome change of pace, with its chilling portrait of a gun-loving teenager and the father who has to deal with his disastrous actions. Leon Anderson is particularly spooky as the gun-toting teen.
